This week was more of a hands-on approach. I got to shadow some coaches and actually worked with several teams. One of the main lessons I learned from this week is how to coach an athlete. There are many different ways of coaching and each athlete may be different than the next. That is why it is extremely important to know your athletes first and then develop how to coach them. For instance, as a strength coach, you could be telling an athlete everything they need to do, but they simply do not understand it. In this case, the strength coach might have to actually show them and use more visual cues for this type of athlete. Other athletes may benefit from verbal cues, tactile cues, etc.
This second week was a great week of showing what goes on in the weight room at Northeaster University. At times, it is very laid back and when some teams come in it can be very hectic. It just goes to show what a collegiate weight room can look like. This week gave me some insight on how to coach athletes and to see other coaches’ styles.
